BOSTON — In an effort to make it easier and more efficient for tens of thousands of nonprofit organizations and charities in Massachusetts to meet annual filing and disclosure requirements, Attorney General Maura Healey today launched a new online portal that charities can use to submit their statutorily required filings.
The portal, available for the first time through the AG’s website, gives more than 25,000 Massachusetts charities and nonprofit organizations the option to make annual regulatory filings online with the AG’s Office in lieu of sending hard copy documentation through the mail.
“Our vibrant nonprofit community has been essential in providing support to those in need and improving quality of life here in Massachusetts,” said AG Healey. “We’re excited to launch this new online portal to make it easier and more efficient for charities as we continue to protect the public’s interest in their activities.”
Massachusetts law requires all public charities operating in the state to register and file annual reports with the AG’s Non-Profit Organizations/Public Charities Division. Public charities operate for the exclusive benefit of the public, and these annual filings provide a valuable source of information regarding a charitable organization's programs, activities, and finances.
Charities may now meet their registration and annual filing requirements through the AG’s new online filing portal. The portal will accept initial registration filings from organizations registering for the first time, as well as charities submitting their annual Form PC financial reports. After setting up an account, users can “save and continue” work on a draft annual report, collect statutorily required signatures using email addresses, and submit required fees through the portal.
The forms on the portal are designed to help support filers in submitting all required information so that registration material and annual reports can promptly be available to the public through the AG’s website. Many charities rely on donations from the public to accomplish their goals. Some charities raise funds on their own, while others hire professionals to fundraise on their behalf. Professional solicitors, fundraising counsel, and commercial co-venturers who solicit on behalf of charities in Massachusetts must also register with the AG’s Office. Financial reports from professional solicitors, fundraising counsel, and commercial co-venturers should continue to be submitted on paper. Annual financial reports for Massachusetts charities and professional solicitors that operate in the state are available for public inspection online. The office will continue to accept hard copies of annual Forms PC and initial registrations as well.
